Notes

"We shall meet by and bye" is probably a reference to the Methodist hymn "We shall meet beyond the river, Bye and bye", written by John Atkinson in 1867.

The interleaved 'IHS' stands for 'Jesus', being the first three letters of the Greek name 'ΙΗΣΟΥΣ' with the SIGMA being latinised as an 'S'.
