It is believed that this impressive memorial was erected in 1940 following the death of Jeremiah Metcalfe, junior, who is commemorated on its north side. Jeremiah Metcalfe was the local celebrity who made his money and reputation as a lady's tailor in London. Queen Mary, wife of George V, numbered amongst his clients whilst she was the Duchess of York.
