Hebden Marriages

Hebden is a township in the parish of Linton, with the parish church St Michael and All Angels being accessed on a footpath which crosses the fields to Linton Stepping Stones. Burnsall, however, was a lot closer for some living in the township, and many chose to worship at St. Wilfred's instead. In 1841 a Chapel of Ease, St. Michael's, was built in Hebden.

The following list of marriages has been compiled from three incomplete sets of Parish Registers. Linton Parish Registers have been published from 1754 to 1928, and all those of people identified as being from Hebden have been included. Note, however, that for the first two years the registers do not record the place of origin of the bride and groom, and that although after 1778 in general more detail is recorded in these registers, they often do not include the place of abode. Hence some periods are thin. It should be remembered that Hebden had a strong non-conformist following, with two thriving Methodist chapels in the village. Methodist chapels were authorised to perform marriages and sacraments from 1795. Such registrations are not included below.

The Burnsall parish registers have been published from 1813 to 1900, and again, the list below records all those identified as being from Hebden.

The Hebden marriage register is available from 1904 to 1989, and and all entries have been included.

Records from the Archbishop Of York Marriage Licences Index, 1613-1839 which reference people from Hebden have also been included, where there is no equivalent parish marriage record. These are annotated with the word 'Licence' in the groom's description. The date is the date the licence was issued, typically the marriage took place a couple of days later, and the name of the church is that stated on the licence.
