1900: The Craven Household Almanack

The Craven Household Almanack was compiled and published by Edmondson & Co., Skipton. The first was published in the early 1860s, and they ceased publication in 1918.

Hebden, from Heb high and dene valley, so given because of the glen running through the village, and meaning the high valley, is a village of 200 inhabitants, 10 miles N.N.E. of Skipton, in the Wharfe valley. The town originally belonged to the Mowbrays, who sold it to Osborne de Arches, who held it in the Domesday Survey in 1080. In 1271 the manor of Hebden was held in the hands of William de Hebden, in whose family it continued until the 15th century, when the Tempests of Bracewell came into possession thereof. The estates were parcelled out early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and the patronage of the church sold to Sir William Craven. The manorial rights are now vested in many owners. The church was built in 1840. Lead mining formerly gave employment to numerous inhabitants, but these have become unprofitable, like numerous others in the valley. The population has decreased by the removal of miners to about 200.

1922: Kelly's Directory of West Riding of Yorkshire

Kelly's Directory, first published in 1837, was a trade directory in England that listed all businesses and tradespeople in a particular city or town, as well as a general directory of postal addresses of local gentry, landowners, charities, and other facilities

Hebden is a township, 2½ miles east on Hebden Beck, which flows into the Wharfe, and over which is a stone bridge of one arch erected in 1827. The village is supplied with water from springs rising at Alleker and the Great Field, collected in tanks and conveyed hither in pipes, the works being of the Skipton Rural District Council and of Mr. Ralph Bowdin respectively. St. Peter's chapel of ease, erected in 1841, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and a western tower with pinnacles, containing one bell: there are 200 sittings: divine service is conducted once every Sunday by the rector of Linton. There are also Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. The Ibbotson Institute, erected in 1902, from money principally derived from the Ibbotson apprentice charity, contains billiard and reading rooms. Thomas Beckett's charity for this township produces £21 10s. a year and Ibbotson's £2. The principal landowner is the Rev. James Slade Foster Chamberlain M.A. The area is 3,562 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £2,631; the population in 1911 was 225.

Post, T. & T. E.D. Office - Thomas F. H. Tattersall, sub-postmaster. Letters through Skipton. Burnsall, 1½ miles distant, is the nearest money order office.

Elementary Schools: Church, Hebden, erected in 1874, for 100 children; Miss Mary G. Bentham, mistress.
