Hebden, from Heb high and dene valley, so given because of a glen running through the village, and meaning the high valley, is a village of about 300 inhabitants, 8 miles N.N.E. of Skipton, in the Wharfe valley. The township originally belonged to the Mowbrays, who sold it to Osborne de Arches, who held it in the Domesday Survey in 1080. In 1271 the manor of Hebden was held in the hands of William de Hebden, in whose family it continued until the 15th century, when the Tempests of Bracewell came into possession thereof. 1887: The Craven Household Almanack

The Craven Household Almanack was compiled and published by Edmondson & Co., Skipton. The first was published in the early 1860s, and they ceased publication in 1918.

Hebden, from Heb high and dene valley, so given because of a glen running through the village, and meaning the high valley, is a village of about 250 inhabitants, 10 miles N.N.E. of Skipton, in the Wharfe valley. The estates were parcelled out early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and the patronage of the church sold to Sir Wm. Craven. The manorial rights are now vested in many owners. The church was built in 1840. In 1271 the manor of Hebden was held in the hands of William de Hebden, in whose family it continued until the 15th century, when the Tempests of Bracewell came into possession thereof. The estates were parcelled out early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and the patronage of the church sold to Sir William Craven. The manorial rights are now vested in many owners. The church was built in 1840. Lead mining formerly gave employment to numerous inhabitants, but these have become unprofitable, like numerous others in the valley. The population has decreased by the removal of the miners in 1891 to 209.
