19th Century Trade Directories
Trade directories have been irregularly published since the early nineteenth century, and are useful for indicating who was doing what in a community. They are by no means definitive, as an individual's inclusion may have been dependent on the publisher being paid a fee, or on whom was considered to be a person of prominence, but they do provide an invaluable insight into the social fabric of the community. The following are extracts relating to Hebden from a selection of nineteenth century directories:

Select year
1822: Edward Baines's Directory and Gazetteer

The Hebden section is contained on page 520 in Volume 1 of the "History, Directory & Gazetteer of the County of York", published in 1822.

The Craven Household Almanack was compiled and published by Edmondson & Co., Skipton. The first was published in the early 1860s, and they ceased publication in 1918.
Hebden, from Heb high and dene valley, so given because of a glen running through the village, and meaning the high valley, is a village of about 300 inhabitants, 8 miles N.N.E. of Skipton, in the Wharfe valley. The township originally belonged to the Mowbrays, who sold it to Osborne de Arches, who held it in the Domesday Survey in 1080. In 1271 the manor of Hebden was held in the hands of William de Hebden, in whose family it continued until the 15th century, when the Tempests of Bracewell came into possession thereof. The estates were parcelled out early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and the patronage of the church sold to Sir William Craven. The manorial rights are now vested in many owners. The church was built in 1840. Lead mining formerly gave employment to numerous inhabitants, but these having become unprofitable, like numerous others in the valley, the population has decreased by the removal of miners.

The Craven Household Almanack was compiled and published by Edmondson & Co., Skipton. The first was published in the early 1860s, and they ceased publication in 1918.
Hebden, from Heb high and dene valley, so given because of a glen running through the village, and meaning the high valley, is a village of 209 inhabitants, 10 miles N.N.E. of Skipton, in the Wharfe valley. The estates were parcelled out early in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and the patronage of the church sold to Sir Wm. Craven. The manorial rights are now vested in many owners. The church was built in 1840. 1898: The Craven Household Almanack
The Craven Household Almanack was compiled and published by Edmondson & Co., Skipton. The first was published in the early 1860s, and they ceased publication in 1918.
Hebden, from Heb high and dene valley, so given because of the glen running through the village, and meaning the high valley, is a village of 209 inhabitants, 10 miles N.N.E. of Skipton, in the Wharfe valley. The town originally belonged to the Mowbrays, who sold it to Osborne de Arches, who held it in the Domesday Survey in 1080. Lead mining formerly gave employment to numerous inhabitants, but these have become unprofitable, like numerous others in the valley. The population has decreased by the removal of miners.
